Cashews: Caution — Occasional Treat Only

Plain, unsalted cashews are not toxic to dogs, but their very high fat content makes them a risky snack. One or two cashews is unlikely to hurt a healthy adult dog, but regular feeding risks pancreatitis and obesity.

Are Cashews Safe for Dogs?

Cashews contain no known dog-toxic compounds like juglone (black walnuts) or tremorgenic mycotoxins (macadamia). However, they are roughly 44% fat and very calorie-dense, making pancreatitis a real concern with repeated feeding.

Never Feed Salted or Flavored CashewsSalt toxicity is a genuine risk. Garlic or onion-seasoned cashews are toxic. Only offer plain, unsalted, roasted or raw cashews if you choose to give any at all.

Risks of Cashews for Dogs

  • Pancreatitis: High fat content can inflame the pancreas, especially in dogs already prone to it
  • Obesity: A single cashew packs ~9 calories; for a small dog this adds up fast
  • Choking hazard: Whole cashews can lodge in small dogs’ throats
  • GI upset: Vomiting or diarrhea after eating cashews is common even in healthy dogs
  • Phosphorus content: Dogs with kidney disease should avoid cashews due to high phosphorus

Safe Serving Guide

Dog Size Max Cashews Frequency
Small (under 20 lbs) 1 cashew Once a week max
Medium (20–50 lbs) 2–3 cashews Twice a week max
Large (50+ lbs) 4–5 cashews A few times a week

Signs of a Problem After Eating Cashews

Watch for these symptoms in the 24 hours after your dog eats cashews:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Lethargy or weakness
  • Hunched posture or abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite

If you see any of these, contact your vet. Severe pancreatitis can be life-threatening.

Can dogs eat cashew butter?
Yes, in tiny amounts if it is plain, unsalted, and contains no xylitol. One lick from a spoon is fine; do not let your dog eat a whole jar.

Can dogs eat cashews every day?
No. The high fat content makes daily cashews a fast route to pancreatitis or obesity. Treat them as an occasional snack at most.

My dog ate a handful of cashews. What do I do?
Watch for vomiting, lethargy, or abdominal pain over the next 24 hours. A handful in a large dog is probably fine; in a small dog, call your vet to be safe.

Are roasted cashews safer than raw?
Both are acceptable (plain/unsalted). Raw cashews sold in stores are actually steamed, not truly raw. Avoid honey-roasted, salted, or flavored varieties.
